5 Issues That Might Be Leading to a Child's Poor Sleep

Updated: Jul 31, 2021

There are several reasons your child might be struggling to get a good night's sleep. Sleep problems are one of the most obvious. However, other conditions can interfere with your child's sleep.

Keep reading to know what they are!

Issue #1: Milk Allergy or Intolerance

With a wide range of symptoms, cow's milk allergy or intolerance affects 5–10% of children and it can also affect sleep once the baby feels significant discomfort. If you suspect your child has a milk allergy or intolerance, see your doctor. They can give you a specific diagnosis and a tailored nutrition plan.

Issue #2: Middle Ear Infection

While it's easier to notice an intense ear infection, a middle ear one is harder to spot. Caused by a build-up of fluid inside the ear, it often disturbs a child's sleep. For the parents, it's not clear why. If that's the case – or if your child has had frequent ear infections – check in with a doctor to rule out middle ear infection.

Issue #3: Colic

Colics are very common in babies because their digestive system is still developing, and it rarely lasts beyond 3–4 months of age. The causes are still unknown, and the symptoms can be broad and difficult to pinpoint. However, if your baby is crying, pulling their feet up, or they have a bloated stomach, you can be almost sure it is colic. Rocking or massaging your baby’s stomach might not help, and sometimes only the passing of time will ease the baby's discomfort.

Not only does this disturb their sleep, but it can also lead to negative sleep associations. It is important to notice what happens after the colics are gone: if the baby goes straight to sleep, ensure you are using the correct sleep association to avoid problems in the future.

Issue #4: Reflux

Another issue that affects babies quite frequently – and you'll be happy to know, outgrow it as well. It's technically not an issue if your baby is healthy and gaining weight, but as the discomfort is more significant when lying down, it might disrupt sleep. To limits the effects of reflux, try:

  • Feed your baby smaller and more frequent portions.

  • Hold your baby upright after meals for 30–60 minutes.

  • Console your child as crying strains the stomach even more.

  • Leave some time between the last feed and bedtime. This can prevent an inappropriate sleep association (feeding and sleeping).

Issue #5: Constipation

Not drinking enough water or eating enough fibre can cause constipation – every adult knows that. In children, the causes are the same! However, the discomfort can disturb the sleep of the little ones. If that's the case, increase the number of liquids and fibre-rich foods such as porridge, cooked vegetables, and some fruit. If your child remains constipated after 2 days, consult a doctor.
